Hey there, fellow anglers! Ready to kick off your day with some world-class fishing on the big lake? Waypoint Charters has got you covered with our top-rated morning half-day fishing trip on Lake Superior. We're talking prime fishing spots, monster trout and salmon, and memories that'll last a lifetime. So grab your buddies, dust off those lucky lures, and let's hit the water!
Picture this: You're out on Lake Superior as the sun's coming up, cool mist rising off the water, and your line's already in the drink. That's how we roll with our 5-hour morning charter. We shove off at 6 am sharp, so you early birds can get the worm (or in this case, the fish). It's the perfect quick hit for when you can't swing a full day but still want to get your fix. We've got room for four on our boat, so bring your fishing crew or make it a family affair. Just remember to snag your fishing license before you hop aboard – we don't want any run-ins with the DNR!
Alright, let's talk fishing. We're not messing around with dinky panfish here – we're after the big boys. Lake Superior's known for its trophy-sized trout and salmon, and we know just where to find 'em. We'll be trolling mostly, dragging lines behind the boat to cover more water. Our setup's dialed in with downriggers, planer boards, and all the bells and whistles to get those lures right where the fish are hanging out. Don't sweat it if you're new to this style – our crew's got you covered. We'll show you the ropes and have you reeling in lunkers in no time.

Alright, let's break down the heavy hitters you'll be targeting on Lake Superior. First up, we've got Coho Salmon. These silver bullets are known for their acrobatic fights and tasty fillets. They typically run 2-5 pounds, but don't be surprised if you hook into a 10-pounder. Cohos are most active in the cooler months, so our morning trips are perfect for catching them when they're feeding near the surface.
Next, we've got Steelhead Trout. These guys are like the track stars of the fish world – fast, powerful, and they'll give you a run for your money. Steelhead in Lake Superior can get up to 10 pounds or more. They're spring and fall runners, but you can find some good-sized ones year-round. When a steelhead hits your line, hold on tight!
Lake Trout are the bruisers of the bunch. These deep-water dwellers can grow to massive sizes, with 20-pounders not uncommon. They're a favorite target for many anglers because of their size and the challenge they present. Lake trout prefer colder water, so we'll often be dropping lines deep to get at them. The fight to bring one of these monsters up from the depths is something you won't forget.
Last but not least, we've got Sockeye Salmon. Also known as Red Salmon, these guys are prized for their rich, flavorful meat. They're not as common as some of the other species, but when we do hook into one, it's always a treat. Sockeyes typically run 4-8 pounds, but they punch above their weight class when it comes to fighting spirit.
Look, I've been guiding on Lake Superior for years, and I still get a rush every time we head out. There's something special about this lake that keeps folks coming back for more. Maybe it's the way the sun paints the water at dawn, or the thrill of watching your rod double over with a big fish on. Could be the stories and laughs shared on the boat, or the satisfaction of bringing home a cooler full of fresh fillets. Whatever it is, I've seen plenty of first-timers turn into regulars after just one trip.
Our morning half-day trips are perfect for those who want to squeeze in some quality fishing without eating up their whole day. You'll be back at the dock by 11 am, with plenty of time to hit up a local spot for a late breakfast (trust me, you'll have worked up an appetite). And let's be real – there's no better way to start your day than by landing a trophy fish before most folks have had their second cup of coffee.
Alright, let me brag a bit about some of the monsters we've been pulling in lately. Just last week, we had a group out that landed a 28-pound lake trout – that bad boy put up a fight for a good 20 minutes before we got him in the net. We've been seeing a lot of action with coho salmon in the 5-7 pound range, perfect eating size. And don't even get me started on the steelhead – we had a client hook into a chrome-bright 12-pounder that took us on a wild ride before we could bring it aboard.
But here's the thing – every day on the lake is different. That's what keeps it exciting. Some days, it's non-stop action with smaller fish. Other days, we might only get a few bites, but they're from the kind of fish that make your arms sore and give you bragging rights for years. Either way, we're always out there putting in the work to make sure you've got the best shot at a great day of fishing.
Alright, folks, if you're not itching to get out on the water by now, check your pulse! Our Lake Superior morning fishing charters are filling up fast, especially as we hit peak season. Whether you're a seasoned angler looking to add some Lake Superior trophies to your list, or a newbie wanting to see what all the fuss is about, we've got you covered.
Remember, we provide all the gear you need, so all you've got to bring is your license, some snacks, and a good attitude. Oh, and maybe a camera – you're gonna want proof when you're telling your buddies about the big one you landed.
So what are you waiting for? Give us a call or hit up our website to lock in your date. Trust me, there's nothing like starting your day with the sun on your face, a rod in your hand, and the possibility of a trophy fish just a cast away. See you on the water!

We had a good time. Fishing was slow because we booked the trip a little early in the season. The captain and first mate were friendly and knowledgeable. We had 3 grand children ages 10 to 13 and the crew were very good with kids. We caught lake trout and released a steelhead.

Captain Nick did an amazing job at making sure we caught fish. When the fish weren’t hitting the first spot, he made some adjustments to find the sweet spot. We had a great time!

Coho salmon are a feisty catch, usually weighing 8-12 pounds and stretching 2-3 feet long. You'll find them in Lake Superior from spring through fall, often hanging out near river mouths or along shoreline drop-offs. These acrobatic fighters are known for their spectacular leaps and powerful runs. The meat is prized for its bright orange color and rich flavor. Late summer into early fall is prime time, as they start staging for their spawning run. To hook one, try trolling with flashy spoons or cut-bait rigs near underwater points and shelves. A local trick: on calm days, look for subtle surface disturbances – coho often swim just below the surface, chasing baitfish.
Lake trout are the true giants of Lake Superior, with 20-30 pounders common and 40+ pound fish possible. These deep-water predators typically hang out in 80-200 feet of water, near underwater humps and drop-offs. Spring and fall are prime, when lakers move shallower. Jigging or trolling with big spoons, cut bait, or live suckers all work well. The fight is more of a steady pull than acrobatics, but landing a trophy laker is a real accomplishment. These fish are excellent eating too, with firm white flesh perfect for smoking. Here's an insider tip: On calm summer days, try trolling just after sunrise – big lakers sometimes venture shallow to feed then.
Sockeye salmon in Lake Superior are a bit smaller than their Pacific cousins, averaging 3-6 pounds. These sleek, silver fish are known for their rich, red flesh – some of the best-eating salmon out there. Look for them from mid-summer through fall, often in cooler pockets of water near tributary mouths or offshore humps. Sockeye can be finicky biters, so light tackle and small lures are key. Try slow-trolling small spoons or flies behind flashers. The fight is impressive for their size, with quick runs and aerial displays. Early morning or late evening often sees the best action. Local secret: Watch for flocks of gulls – they'll lead you right to feeding sockeye.
Steelhead are the sea-run cousins of rainbow trout, usually 5-10 pounds but sometimes topping 20. These hard-fighting fish enter Lake Superior tributaries in spring and fall. Look for them in faster water near gravel beds or deep pools. Steelhead are prized for their acrobatic fight – they'll leap clear out of the water and make blistering runs. Spring is often best, as fish are aggressive before spawning. Drift egg sacs or swing streamers in likely holding spots. For a real thrill, try sight-fishing with light tackle when water's clear. Pro tip: Focus on water temps in the 40s and 50s – that's when steelhead are most active.
