Hey there, fellow anglers! If you're itching to get out on the big lake and reel in some monster fish, you're in for a treat. Waypoint Charters offers a top-notch 4-hour fishing trip on Lake Superior that'll have you hooked from the moment you cast your line. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just getting your feet wet, this charter is the real deal for anyone looking to tangle with some trophy-sized salmon and trout.
Picture this: You're out on the water as the sun's just peeking over the horizon, the cool lake breeze in your face, and the anticipation of what might be on the end of your line. That's what you're in for with this half-day morning charter. Captain Nick Hagadone knows these waters like the back of his hand and he's ready to put you on the fish. You'll be cruising out on a sweet 27' Pursuit that's decked out with all the gear you need to land the big ones. And don't worry about bringing your own rod – they've got you covered. Just remember to snag your fishing license before you show up, and you're good to go.
When it comes to fishing Lake Superior, trolling is the name of the game. We'll be setting up a spread of lines behind the boat, using a mix of downriggers, dipsy divers, and planer boards to cover different depths. The captain will be watching the fish finder like a hawk, looking for those telltale arches that signal big fish below. We might be running spoons, flashers with flies, or cut bait – whatever's working that day. And here's a pro tip: keep an eye on the color of your lures. Some days these Lake Superior fish are picky, and switching up your color scheme can make all the difference between a slow day and a cooler full of fish.
Don't just take my word for it – here's what some happy anglers have to say about their trips with Waypoint Charters:
"Captain Nick made us all feel so welcome and had an excellent sense of humor. We were able to ask questions and learned a lot. Our group had experienced fisher-people and teenage novices and we all had a great time!" - tony
"Nick was a great captain!" - Ben
"Captain Nick did an amazing job at making sure we caught fish. When the fish weren't hitting the first spot, he made some adjustments to find the sweet spot. We had a great time!" - Tonya
Coho Salmon: These silver bullets are the bread and butter of Lake Superior fishing. Averaging 3-5 pounds but sometimes pushing 10, cohos are known for their acrobatic fights and delicious meat. They start showing up in good numbers by mid-summer, and the action can be red-hot through fall. When a school of cohos moves through, it's not uncommon to have multiple rods go off at once – talk about excitement!
Steelhead Trout: Also known as rainbow trout, these are the high-flyers of the lake. Steelhead are famous for their spectacular leaps and blistering runs. They average 5-8 pounds but can top 20. The spring run can be epic, but you can find them in the lake year-round. Landing a chrome-bright steelhead is a trophy for any angler.
Lake Trout: The true giants of Lake Superior. Lakers can live for decades and grow to massive sizes – 20-pounders are not uncommon, and 30+ pound fish are caught every year. They prefer cooler, deeper water, so we often target them with downriggers. The fight of a big lake trout is more of a powerful, bulldogging affair compared to the acrobatics of salmon or steelhead. But when you feel that heavy head shake, you know you're in for a battle.
Sockeye Salmon: While not as common as cohos, sockeye (also called red salmon) are a prized catch in Lake Superior. They average 4-8 pounds and are known for their rich, red flesh – considered by many to be the best-eating salmon of all. Sockeye tend to run a bit later in the season, with peak times usually in August and September. When you hook into one of these hard-fighting fish, you'll know why they're so sought after.
Look, if you're even thinking about fishing Lake Superior, this charter is the way to go. You've got a knowledgeable captain, a fully-rigged boat, and some of the best fishing grounds right at your fingertips. Whether you're looking to fill the freezer, cross some species off your bucket list, or just enjoy a morning on the water with family and friends, Waypoint Charters has got you covered. The fish are out there waiting – all you've got to do is book your spot and show up ready for action. Trust me, once you feel that first big hit, you'll be planning your next trip before you even get back to the dock. So what are you waiting for? Let's go fishing!

We had a good time. Fishing was slow because we booked the trip a little early in the season. The captain and first mate were friendly and knowledgeable. We had 3 grand children ages 10 to 13 and the crew were very good with kids. We caught lake trout and released a steelhead.

Coho salmon are a favorite target on Lake Superior, typically running 8-12 pounds but can reach over 30. Look for them in the top 30 feet of water, especially near river mouths and along shorelines. These acrobatic fighters put on quite a show when hooked, known for their spectacular leaps. Best fishing is usually late summer through fall as they stage for their spawning runs. Coho have tasty orange-red meat that's prized for its rich flavor. To boost your chances, try trolling with flashy spoons or cut plugs that mimic baitfish. When you see jumping salmon, that's a good sign they're actively feeding - get your lines in the water fast!
Lake trout are the kings of the deep in Lake Superior. These big predators average 15-40 pounds but can top 70. They prefer cold, well-oxygenated water, so look for them near bottom structure in depths of 60-150 feet most of the year. In spring and fall, they'll move shallower. Lakers are slow-growing but long-lived, giving them time to reach impressive sizes. They put up a dogged fight, especially when hooked in deep water. Jigging is a go-to tactic - try large spoons or soft plastics that mimic baitfish. For a more relaxed approach, trolling with downriggers works well. These fish make excellent table fare too. Here's a local tip: On calm summer days, try fishing at night when lakers move closer to the surface to feed.
While not as common as coho or lake trout in Lake Superior, sockeye salmon offer a unique fishing experience when available. These compact powerhouses typically run 4-15 pounds, with striking red flesh that's considered top-notch eating. Look for them in cooler, open water areas of the lake, often 20-60 feet down. They're aggressive fighters, known for their endurance. Sockeye can be finnicky, but once you find them, the action can be fast. Trolling with small, flashy spoons or flies is usually most effective. Pay attention to water temperature - they prefer it on the cooler side. The best time to target sockeye is usually mid to late summer as they start staging for their spawning runs. Pro tip: If you see schools of smaller baitfish on your fish finder, sockeye are likely nearby.
Steelhead are basically sea-run rainbow trout, spending part of their lives in Lake Superior before returning to rivers to spawn. They average 24 inches but can reach 45 inches and 55 pounds. These hard-fighting fish are a blast to catch, known for their acrobatic jumps and long runs. Look for them near shore in spring and fall during their migrations. They'll hit a variety of lures, but fly fishing with streamers or nymphs can be especially effective. For spin fishing, try drifting or plunking with roe or casting spoons. Steelhead fishing can be challenging, but that's part of the appeal. My tip: Focus on river mouths and underwater structures where they stage before heading upstream. The reward is an epic battle with one of Lake Superior's top gamefish.
