There's something magical about being on Lake Superior at 6 AM when the water's calm and the fish are hungry. Captain Nick Hagadone knows these waters like the back of his hand, and his 4-hour morning charters are the perfect way to experience world-class fishing on the largest of the Great Lakes. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting your feet wet, this half-day trip gives you the best shot at landing coho salmon, lake trout, and steelhead without eating up your entire day. The 27-foot Pursuit is rigged with everything you need – just bring your valid fishing license and get ready for some of the best freshwater fishing in North America.
Your morning starts early, but trust me, it's worth every minute of lost sleep. Lake Superior's fish are most active in the cooler morning hours, and Captain Nick times these trips perfectly to hit the sweet spots when salmon and trout are feeding. The boat handles beautifully even when Superior gets a little moody, and with space for up to 4 anglers, you'll have plenty of room to fish without bumping elbows. Nick's approach is hands-on but relaxed – he'll teach you the techniques that work best for each species while keeping the atmosphere fun and pressure-free. Families love these trips because kids get just as much attention as the adults, and the 4-hour window keeps everyone engaged without wearing out the younger crew members.
Lake Superior fishing is all about covering water and presenting your bait at the right depth, which is why trolling dominates here. Captain Nick runs a mix of downriggers, planer boards, and lead core lines to target fish at different depths and spread your offerings across a wider area. The boat's equipped with quality rods, reels, and a tackle selection that's dialed in for Superior's conditions – from spoons and plugs that mimic baitfish to flies that trigger aggressive strikes from salmon. Nick adjusts his approach based on water temperature, weather, and recent fish activity, so you're always fishing the most productive patterns. He's not shy about sharing his knowledge either, explaining why certain lures work better in different conditions and teaching you to read the electronics so you can see what's happening below the surface.

"We went out for a full day fishing trip today and had a fantastic time! Our Captain was professional, personable, and super knowledgeable. We caught several fish and made great memories. We will be using Waypoint Charters often." - Adam. "Nick was a great captain and guide for our intergenerational group. We caught some fish, shared laughs and stories of the north shore, and had a lovely day out on this beautiful, awe-inspiring lake." - Tom.
Coho salmon are the stars of the show from late spring through early fall, and for good reason. These silver bullets typically run 3 to 8 pounds and fight like fish twice their size, making blistering runs and aerial displays that'll get your heart pumping. Cohos love to cruise the mid-depths during morning hours, often between 20 and 50 feet down, where they're actively feeding on alewives and other baitfish. What makes them so exciting is their unpredictability – one minute you're trolling peacefully, the next your rod is doubled over and line is screaming off the reel. They're also excellent eating, with firm, flavorful meat that's perfect for the grill.
Lake trout are the heavyweights of Superior, and landing one is always a memorable experience. These deep-water natives can live for decades and grow to impressive sizes – fish in the 10 to 20-pound range are common, with occasional giants pushing 30 pounds or more. Lakers prefer the cooler, deeper waters and are most active in spring and fall when the lake temperatures are more to their liking. They're not the flashiest fighters, but their steady, powerful runs and stubborn resistance make for great arm-burning battles. The best part about lake trout fishing is that Superior's population is incredibly healthy, giving you excellent odds of connecting with these native beauties.
Steelhead trout bring a different kind of excitement to Lake Superior fishing. These chrome-bright fish are basically rainbow trout that have adapted to Great Lakes life, and they combine the best qualities of both worlds – the size and strength that comes from living in big water, plus the acrobatic tendencies that make rainbows so much fun. Steelhead can show up anywhere from near the surface to mid-depths, and they're notorious for their spectacular jumps and lightning-fast runs. Spring and fall offer the best steelhead action, when these fish are most active and aggressive. Even a smaller steelhead will give you a fight you won't soon forget.
Sockeye salmon add another dimension to Superior's fishery, though they're less common than cohos. When you do connect with one, you'll know it immediately – sockeyes are built like little torpedoes and fight with surprising intensity for their size. They typically run smaller than cohos but make up for it with pure determination and speed. These fish are most active during cooler periods and prefer slightly deeper water than their coho cousins. Sockeyes also happen to be some of the best eating fish in the lake, with deep red meat that's rich in flavor and perfect for smoking or grilling.
Lake Superior fishing doesn't get much better than this – a top-rated captain who knows where the fish are, a well-equipped boat that can handle whatever the lake throws at it, and morning timing that puts you on the water when the

We had a good time. Fishing was slow because we booked the trip a little early in the season. The captain and first mate were friendly and knowledgeable. We had 3 grand children ages 10 to 13 and the crew were very good with kids. We caught lake trout and released a steelhead.

These silver bullets of Lake Superior are what most anglers dream about hooking into. Coho typically run 12-30 inches and pack serious fight in that compact frame - they're famous for their acrobatic jumps and can leap up to 6 feet out of the water. We usually find them in the top 40 feet of water, especially around temperature breaks and structure. Spring through fall offers the best action, with early morning being prime time when they're actively feeding. What makes coho special is that combination of aggressive strikes, aerial displays, and excellent table fare - that bright orange meat is hard to beat. My go-to tip: when you hook one, keep steady pressure but give them room to run. They'll tire themselves out with those jumps, and that's when you reel them in.

Lake trout are the kings of Superior's deep water - these char can hit 40+ pounds and live in the coldest, deepest parts of the lake. They've got that distinctive grey-green color with cream spots, and they're built for the abyss. Most of the time we're fishing 60-150 feet down, especially around drop-offs and underwater structure. Spring right after ice-out and fall are your best shots, though we catch them year-round. What makes lakers special is their size potential and the challenge of deep-water fishing - plus they're fantastic eating with that firm, flaky meat. The fight is more of a bulldogging battle than flashy jumps. Pro tip: when jigging deep, drop your lure to bottom then work it 10-20 feet up. They'll often suspend just off the bottom waiting for an easy meal.

Sockeye are the smaller, scrappier cousins in Superior's salmon family - typically 18-32 inches and 4-15 pounds of pure muscle. Unlike other salmon, they're clean-looking fish with metallic blue-green backs and no black spots. We find them in mid-water depths, usually 30-80 feet, chasing schools of baitfish. Late spring through early fall gives you the best chances, especially during overcast conditions. What sets sockeye apart is their incredible table quality - that deep red, rich meat is restaurant-grade stuff. They're also surprisingly strong fighters for their size, with quick runs and head-shaking battles. Here's what I tell guests: sockeye feed more aggressively when water temps hit 55-65 degrees, so pay attention to your fish finder's temperature readings and target those zones.

Steelhead are basically rainbow trout that decided to live large - these chrome-sided fighters average 24 inches but can stretch past 45 inches in Superior's cold waters. They're the same species as rainbows, but their lake-run lifestyle makes them stronger, more silver, and way more aggressive. You'll find them cruising mid-depths around 20-80 feet, following baitfish and temperature zones. Best fishing runs from late fall through early spring when they're most active. What guests love about steelhead is that they fight like they're twice their size - long runs, headshakes, and pure determination. The meat is excellent too, firmer than regular trout. Here's a local trick: when the water's over 60 degrees, they'll hit surface lures more readily, so don't be afraid to fish shallow on warm mornings.
